The Javan green magpie (Cissa thalassina) is a passerine bird in the crow family, Corvidae.This critically endangered species is endemic to montane forests on the Indonesian island of Java. Prior to 1990, Javan Green Magpies were observed erratically and in small numbers in trade: none were recorded among 150,000 birds in a market in Jakarta in 1989 (Basuni and Setiyani 1989). It is therefore not currently protected under Indonesian law.   It formerly included the Bornean green magpie as a subspecies, in which case the "combined" species was known as the short-tailed magpie. Based on IUCN criteria, it has the global status “critically endangered”. IUCN SSC Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group meets for the first time in Jurong Bird Park, Singapore.

By 1992, 25 of 39 market surveys recorded the species and 320 individuals were authorised for export between August and December 1992 (Nash 1993).
This Javan endemic with special habitat requirements was recently recognized as a separate species from the more common Bornean Green Magpie (Cissa jefferyi).
